Dog Licenses in Berrien County:

Michigan law mandates the licensing of all dogs aged four months and older, with a requirement for licensing newly acquired dogs within 30 days. To purchase a dog license in Berrien County, residency in the county is a prerequisite.

Starting in 2023, licensing transitions from a calendar year renewal to align with the renewal date based on the pet’s rabies vaccination date. For 2022 one-year licenses, there’s amnesty until the dog’s 2023 rabies vaccination date. Three-year licenses align with the corresponding 3-year rabies vaccination due date.

For instance, if a dog received a 1-year vaccination in May 2022, the 2022 one-year dog license lasts until May 31, 2023. If a dog has a current 3-year license issued in 2021 or 2022, it aligns with the 3-year rabies vaccination date. Opting for a 1-year dog license with a 3-year rabies vaccine means the license renews annually on the vaccine anniversary.

A $20.00 delinquent fee applies to dog licenses deemed delinquent 30 days after the vaccination or anniversary date. Renewal notices, mailed 30 days before the rabies vaccination month, aid dog owners, but not receiving one doesn’t waive the delinquent fee.

Service dogs, per the Americans with Disabilities Act, qualify for a fee-free 1-year license if they perform specific tasks. Therapy and emotional support dogs don’t qualify. Denied requests lead to regular license fees.

Dog licenses can be purchased online from Berrien County Animal Control.
